This blog has been on my mind for several months; just as a zygote in a mother’s womb turns into an embryo and, nine months later, into a baby, this blog came to light today. After endless weeks of serious ruminations on the topic and getting comfortable sharing my points of view with an online community, it is that this blog is finally alive.
This is not the first time I have had a blog. Back in 2002, a group of friends at Yahoo! Mexico, where I used to work, created a blog for me named The Beaver as a gift to write the new chapter in my life in Moscow, Russia. At that time, blogs as a tool to share ideas and communicate were in their early stages. You may even say that it was kind of a luxury to have one. That is why the present my coworkers made for me was extremely cherished. On it, I wrote about my encounters with Russian culture and society, the things that amused me there, what I found peculiar, and what truly challenged me. Overall, I believe it was quite successful, as I received comments from people in different countries eager to learn more about Russia. Also, the blog turned out to be an excellent resource for not feeling isolated and for sharing with my readers what I was going through.
Today, my situation is different. I’m no longer in an “exotic” country (from a Mexican perspective), blogs have become extremely popular, and I’m not that young anymore. I’m in my fifties; I have a family and children; I have come a long way to get my graduate education; I deal with Parkinson’s Disease, and I live in a country that does not have this mysterious aura. Thus, what to write about it? I love to have conversations over a cup of coffee with friends, family, and colleagues. They can happen at cafes, in kitchens, at universities, in recreational centers, or just while walking on a busy street or in parks; they’re always enjoyable and can challenge how I see the world. I think that conversations over a cup of coffee are those little treasures of the path of life where you can share your concerns, ideas, dreams, frustrations, plans, points of view, silence… There is room for almost everything. So, welcome to my blog. I hope you enjoy reading it over a cup of coffee too, however you prefer it; for me, I love lattes.
